Progression or course of narcolepsy
The general course of narcolepsy is difficult to describe, and the order in which symptoms appear varies. In most patients, however, daytime sleepiness is the first symptom, either on its own or accompanied by cataplexy within a year
Sleepiness and cataplexy persist throughout life although they often improve after retirement, probably owing to better management of activities, daytime napping, and adjustment of night- time sleep.
However, nocturnal sleep disturbances remain the same or usually worsen as patients get older.
