Effectiveness on quality of life
An international trial evaluated the effectiveness of sodium oxybate on quality of life in narcolepsy. An analysis of changes in health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in the study used the Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire (FOSQ), a 30-item, Likert-style questionnaire examining the effect of sleepiness on the ability to conduct daily activities. The results demonstrated that HR-QOL improved with sodium oxybate treatment in a dose related manner, and that changes from baseline median FOSQ total scores occurred in all sodium oxybate treatment groups (p<0.001). In the sodium oxybate 9 g/day treatment group, the change in median total FOSQ score and activity level, vigilance, general productivity and social outcomes subscales were all significantly different from placebo (all p<0.01). However, differences between the placebo group and the sodium oxybate 4.5 g/day groups were not significant.
